The adventures of “Local Man” |
ماجراهای مرد محلی |
The article begins:
Local man rescues dog.
Local man finds lost family.
Local man arrested twice in same day for DUI.
Local Man is famous. He doesn't have a publicist, but he gets more ink than Madonna or Michael Jackson. In some newspapers, Local Man appears in more headlines than the president of the United States.
Local man discovers unnamed asteroid.
Local man's ministry a sign from God.
Judge finds local man incompetent.
Local Man is not, of course, just one man. Local Man is newspaper shorthand for somebody who lives nearby and has done something noteworthy but isn't famous enough to identify by name in a headline. Local Man comes from all walks of life. He comes in all shapes and sizes. He is the common man, the man on the street, the salt of the earth. Local Man is everyman. He is us.
He can be found wherever newspapers are printed in English...continued...
Which brings us back to my question. What is the equivalent of "local man" in Persian newspapers? And what kinds of things has Persian local man been up to?
I guess I need to start reading the newspapers.
What about Local Woman? The phrase "Local Girl makes good" also comes to mind. This phrase is used when someone who grew up in your neighborhood went on to fame and fortune. Jennifer Lopez has a song, "Jenny from the Block", which refers to this phenomenon.
The Peter Carlson article is a wonderful piece of literature. I would love to see it's equivalent written in Persian with the headlines taken from stories about our various local heroes. If you have some headlines, send them in. Add them to the comments. What has Local Persian Man (and Woman) been up to? What kind of things do they do? What kinds of insights into Local Persian Man can be gleaned from them?
Local Persian Man/Woman/Person, who are you?
