Safety Vision Statement
Here's a first stab at a vision of safety for Iran.
A vision statement is a vivid idealized description of a desired outcome that inspires, energizes and helps you create a mental picture of your target. Now, imagine that:
Our province has world-class institutions and organizations that effectively reduce the potential risk of death, injuries, property damage and economic and social dislocation resulting from natural and man-made hazards.
We can elaborate on the above as follows (Remember, this is an idealized representation of the future):
- Natural hazards include earthquakes, landslides, floods, fires, climate, epidemics and other hazards.
- Man-made hazards relate to:
- Land Use (building and road safety, emergency response, airport land use, hazardous materials spills and waste management, water potability, sewage...);
- Social Issues (law enforcement and crime reduction, health care, poverty...); and
- Political Issues (political stability, refugee issues, due process, relationship with other countries, human rights...).
We have invested in safety and risk analysis and have a clear understanding of the priorities and range of issues for our province.
We have invested in quality infrastructure and preventative measures.
We have the best safety codes (including public works and building codes) in the world; and a code process that is efficient and well administered. The codes are effective in minimizing risk without reducing economic value. In fact, they add to the economic value of property by ensuring a stable, safe and attractive investment environment.
The relationship between safety and property value is well defined and understood, and costs for implementing safety measures in society are allocated in ever more beneficial and sustainable ways.
Our citizens, private and public organizations and government continually improve their effectiveness, cooperation and coordination on issues related to safety and risk reduction.
Roles and procedures are well defined and rehearsed.
We have a qualified network of dedicated emergency professionals, respected and admired, who rise to every occasion to meet emergency needs.
A large portion of our ordinary citizens are also well educated and trained in emergency issues and procedures and are able to get involved on a volunteer basis when the need arises. We all feel more secure knowing that competent help is usually very close at hand.
