Polygamy

چند همسری

Is there more polygamy in the USA or in Iran?

According to this article, 40,000 people live in illegal monogamous families in Utah, but this includes everyone in the family, husband, wives, and children. They are trying to make it legal, and arguing that monogamy is discriminating against their religion. If this sort of argument works, then same sex couples will be able to use similar reasoning to make their marriages legitimate as well.

But back to Iran. How many people actually live in polygamous marriages? Need statistics. Would they even be accurate?

Here are statistics on polygamy in Italy - Muslim immigrants. Interesting to note that the British government gives welfare to each spouse in a polygamous marriage, whereas the Italians only pay up for one spouse.

Gary Becker of the University of Chicago makes a case for polygamous unions, and says "Note that polygyny is rare even in those Muslim countries that allow it, such as Iran." But he doesn't say HOW rare. I want numbers.
