This video shows the world's air traffic over the course of a day. See North America, Europe and Asia light up much more than the rest of the world. Air traffic activity is a good economic indicator. If you've got people moving to and fro in airplanes, there must be a lot of economic activity to support it.

The video takes a little bit to download. I like how you can see the activity peak during daylight hours, and fade a bit after midnight.
